| Michelle Wilson Born: 8/17/76 Lewisburg, PA Currently resides in Philadelphia Artist Statement This past year, my imagery has evolved. My recent work has been an exploration of archetype and psychological states. I wanted the viewer to be confronted by the silence in my work. In the past, I used the figure to express these thoughts and emotions. My new work is a shift to an interpretation of landscape. However, the motivating themes have remained the same. I want my landscapes to evoke the same ideas as my figures did. I find that the possibilities opened by printmaking allow for more exploration of my themes than any other medium. Typically, my work is in a graphic medium, pure drawing, printmaking or a mix of the two. These mediums allow my quiet imagery to have more force due to their nature. Particularly in printmaking, the layered impressions break the flatness of the picture plane and stretch forward toward the viewer, instead of receding in space as they do in painting. Graphic mediums allow light to have more impact, and thus it becomes the transformative substance in my work. These ideas allow my work to be distilled into pure meaning and emotion.
